Yang Xiao-lin |
Partly Japanese, Yang Xiao-lin was born by the beautiful banks of Jiangnan. She lives in Hong Kong where the
refined oriental culture combined with adventurous western outlook has greatly influenced her. Ms.Yang is classic,
traditional, elegant and contemporary. In essence, she typifies the modern woman in today's China
"...unbound with a mixture of everything". Her expressive voice brings forth a fresh sound shifting from
ancient times, new and into the distant future. Whisper of Tenderness is Yang Xiao-lin's first album and I Take You There is her second album on KIIGO. |
Whisper of Tenderness |
||
Whisper of Tenderness was composed and conducted by the Chinese musician WU Xuan. YANG Xiao-lin, the very
expressive singer on this album was the executive producer. The lyrics have been adapted from poems and legends
of the Han, Tang and Song Dynasties. The atmosphere on this album is filled with classical elegance. Chinese and
western instruments together create this unique sound. Whisper of Tenderness and her voice are truly a brigde
between East and West as her singing connects the ancient and traditional to the modern world. |

Yang Xiao-lin's WHISPER OF TENDERNESS is much more of a world music album, although it too features incredible production values with an extremely wide dynamic range. Yang Xiao-lin's sweet-toned voice warbles in Chinese above an instrumental bed that consists primarily of traditional Chinese instruments including Erhu, Guzheng and Pipa (played in a decidedly contemporary style) with a liberal addition of MIDI electronics and western orchestra. The music has a bit of pop, but keeping the essence of traditional Chinese music. The songs on WHISPER OF TENDERNESS let you feel the lifestyle and the peaceful atmosphere of the golden times in the ancient China 1000 years ago. |
I Take You There |
||
I Take You There is resplendent with rich emotion, natural elegance, pureness and illusion.
Most of the songs are Ms. Yang's unique arrangements of traditional Chinese, Japanese and Indonesian folk songs
and have been beloved since the 1930s and 1940s. In whatever context and interpretation, her performances
are alive with exotic images full of fantasy and color much like China's paintings and calligraphy. I Take You There is truly a bridge between East and West as her singing connects the ancient and traditional to the modern world. |

"Yang Xiao-lin's I TAKE YOU THERE is much more of a pop album, although it also features incredible
production values with an extremely wide dynamic range and jaw-dropping sonics. Undeniable pop, but not
in the sense that we are used to in Europe. Yang Xiao-lin's sweet-toned voice warbles in Chinese above
an instrumental bed that consists primarily of traditional Chinese instruments (played in a decidedly
contemporary style) with a liberal addition of MIDI electronics. The songs cover a fairly wide range of
styles, but they are all very listenable. I TAKE YOU THERE also sometimes has a bit of disco glamour, but
alltogether here is a smooth mixture for listening, dancing and dreaming." (Josef Bomback) |
KIIGO, the Chinese word for "kiwi fruit" was established in 1990 as the platform for HUGO's Contemporary World and New Age Music. This series is distinguished by its highly creative artists, each with their own unique musical styles. KIIGO, very much like the kiwi fruit, by the way, was originally from China but subsequently became identified with New Zealand where it improved to "kiigo" which is bigger and sweeter. |
