The Chinese wind instruments are a big family with more than hundred various sounds and timbres. The most popular Chinese wind instrument is the Dizi, a transverse bamboo flute with a history of 2000 years. The Xiao, a single tube in different kinds for horizontal or vertical blowing was created during the Han Dynasty 1800 years ago. Xun is an ancient melodic instrument with a history of probably 7000 years. They are usually made of porcelain, stone, bone ore ivory. The Bawu, a single reed wind instrument is popular in the minority areas of Yunnan. The Suona looks like a trumpet but has seven holes. Both ends are made of copper, the body is made of wood. Bili is an ancient instrument, today made of wood with eight holes. Its tembre is mellow and delicate because the blowing end is connected to a reed. The Hulusi is a six hole bamboo tube with an inbuilt reed made of silver or copper. |
