"The Royal Academy of Music is custodian of one of the finest collections of violins, violas and cellos in the world. It includes some 200 instruments, many by the great classical Italien makers including the Amatis, Stradivari, Rugeri, Guarneri and Guadagnini. Violin making in Cremona from the moddle of the 16th century until the first half of the 18th century is regarded as the greatest and most innovative periodes in the history of the craft. The instruments lent by the Academy for this recording demonstrate their remarkable tonal qualities. It is the great fortune of the Academy to have been bequeathed six important instruments by Stradivari including a cello dated 1726. The other five which are heard here include early, middle and late periode violins and the famous 1696 viola 'Archinto'. An Andrea Guarneri violin and three generations of the Amati family are represented by four very fine violins and a rare 'tenor' viola. The two distinguished artists heard on this recording, violinist XUE Wei and violist Paul Silverthorne, are professors at the Academy."
